Materials Management Week

October 3rd, 2011

Summa Western Reserve Hospital relies heavily on numerous departments including the prompt services of its Materials Management Department. The department covers the supply chain logistics of purchasing, inventory replenishment and shipping and receiving for the entire hospital campus and its clinics. Currently receiving 612 items supplied on more than 500 pallets a year, the department oversees a daily average of $68,000 in inventory.

Materials Management also participates in the coordination of capital purchases and the analysis of pricing for equipment, instruments and service agreements. They process about 880 purchase orders for supplies and equipment through 4,300 product lines each year totaling about $1.6 million in purchases. In addition to the inventory, the department manages the mailing services of the hospital, utilizing key volunteers to accomplish the task.

The department staff can be found pushing various carts to the many areas of the hospital, analyzing purchase agreements or quotes, or placing one of the many purchase orders that are issued. No matter the task, materials management is ready to assist any need.
