Summa Western Reserve Hospital is helping make the holiday a little merrier for local children, teens and families in need this season. The hospital made it a goal to get gifts for 100 local children and teens as part of the Salvation Army “Angel Giving Tree” donation drive. The hospital fulfilled that goal (and a Salvation Army truck) this December. Among gifts donated by physicians and employees were toys, clothes, iPods, bikes, sporting equipment, coats, hats, gloves and more.

Sheraton Suites Akron/Cuyahoga Falls to Host Largest One Day Blood Drivein Summit County

Imagine giving a gift that everyone wants but money can’t buy.

That gift could be one that brings more smiles, more joy, more hugs, and more time with family and friends. Then imagine you can by donating blood and platelets through your American Red Cross.

On Thursday, December 22, 2011 Sheraton Suites Akron/Cuyahoga Falls will host the largest blood drive in Summit County.  From 7 AM to 7 PM blood donors will have the chance to donate the gift of life at the beautiful hotel, located at 1989 Front Street in Cuyahoga Falls.

All who come to donate will be automatically entered to win the Grand Prize Raffle item:  A complete Best Buy Home Theater Experience Package which includes a 42” TV, an XBOX 360 and Blu Ray disc. Two runners-up will also have the chance to win one of two Apple iPad 2.

Donors will also enjoy special refreshments, holiday entertainment and receive a free goody bag!  Those who come to give will also have the chance to win great raffle prizes throughout the day, including a Sheraton Suites New Year’s Eve Overnight & Party Package for two!

“Last year, over 850 volunteer blood donors came forward to give at this special holiday event.  Because each pint that’s donated can help up to three people, the lives of nearly 2,500 patients in need of blood transfusions may have been touched,” stated Katy Berger, Communications Associate for the Northern Ohio Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross.

Every day of every season, hospital patients need blood and platelets for the treatment of serious diseases like cancer, for lifesaving surgeries, or for emergency care related to accidents or trauma. And while the need is constant, donations from volunteer blood donors sometimes taper off during busy holiday times.

This blood drive is proudly sponsored by Rubber City Radio Group, Summa Health System, Summa Western Reserve Hospital, Sheraton Suites Akron/Cuyahoga Falls, the City of Cuyahoga Falls, Gavin Scott Salon & Spa and the Village of Silver Lake.

Appointments are strongly recommended for this blood drive.  Donors can schedule by calling 1-800-RED CROSS or by visiting redcrossblood.org and entering the sponsor code ‘summa’.

“When you give blood or platelets, you’re giving someone hope,” said Berger. “It’s hard to think of a more perfect gift.”

How to Donate Blood

To schedule an appointment to donate please call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org for more information. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in some states), meet weight and height requirements (110 pounds or more, depending on their height) and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. Please bring your Red Cross blood donor card or other form of positive ID when you come to donate.

About the American Red Cross

The Northern Ohio Region serves 19 counties, and needs to collect about 900 units of blood a day to meet patient need in 57 hospitals. In addition to supplying nearly half of the nation’s blood, the American Red Cross teaches lifesaving skills, provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization—not a government agency—and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.
