Aug. 12, 2015 — On Aug. 19 and 20, Western Reserve Hospital will host the sixth annual “Rumble at the Reserve” blood drive, with the help of special celebrity guest and Trans Am Series Racer Amy Ruman, who has helped support the event in the community. The motorsports-themed blood drive is open to the public, and all donors will receive a free T-shirt and be eligible to win other prizes.
The 2015 Rumble features Western Reserve Hospital’s departments of surgery and medicine squaring off in a race to see which department can bring in the most donors, with the winner receiving the coveted “Rumble at the Reserve Cup.” Donors are invited to choose which department to support during the drive.
In order to spur employee participation, the hospital has offered gift cards to early sign ups and even circulated trash-talk letters between the two lead physicians, Dr. Patrick Blakeslee, chairman of the department of medicine, and Dr. Phillip Khalil, chairman of the department of surgery.
“We like to have fun with the competition aspect of Rumble at the Reserve, but we’re ultimately working together to help supply the American Red Cross with life-saving blood,” said Dr. Blakeslee.
As Western Reserve Hospital’s signature outreach event, Rumble at the Reserve has won the American Red Cross “Largest One Day Hospital Blood Drive” award for four consecutive years.
The American Red Cross is facing a looming shortage and urgently needs eligible donors with O negative, B negative and A negative blood to give now to prevent an emergency situation, according to the organization’s website.
“Blood donations are one of the most vitally important tools we have to be able to respond to emergencies, so we’re urging community and staff involvement,” said Dr. Khalil. “Every blood donation matters, so we’re hoping to see a big turnout at the Rumble.”
The Rumble at the Reserve will be held in the hospital auditoriums on Aug. 19, from 6 a.m. – 1 p.m., and Aug. 20, from 6 a.m. – 7 p.m. To sign up for Rumble at the Reserve, go to RedCrossBlood.org and enter the sponsor code 44223.
