Healing Heart Exhibit Portraits and Places by Carolyn Thompson is two ongoing bodies of work and includes portraits of local and regional friends and acquaintances, as well as local places with strong emotional resonance, especially to those in recovery.

Her interest in people has driven this ongoing portrait project. “I hope this body of  artwork captures the strength of spirit of each sitter in an honest manner,” says Thompson. Perhaps it captures some psychological tension that reminds viewers of someone they know or remember from their lives. Viewers might also see something of themselves in each portrait and feel our human interconnectedness and hope.

Paint, brushwork and color express her personal feelings toward each sitter. Painting from life allows her to capture the immediate moment, that day’s mood and the  current social climate for each of the sittings.

The Places part of the show includes a series of giclée, limited-edition prints depicting historical residences and places from our area. In this, she uses color and abstraction in an effort to heighten the “ideal” quality of the buildings and to add positivity to the stories behind the role of our region in the history of recovery. “The job of the artist is to make things understandable, usable, accessible, enjoyable and important.”

Her work is held in many private collections and has been exhibited extensively including locally at the Box Gallery, Summit Art Space, Myers School of Art and the Cuyahoga Valley Art Center.

Thompson received her BFA from the Columbus College of Art & Design. When not riding the bike trails of the CVNP, designing for local clients, or geeking out in her garden, she lives and works in Highland Square.
